Sports Injuries
Sports Injuries
Since the 1988 Olympics in Seoul Korea, chiropractors have ‘officially’ served on the elite medical staff. Why? Because Olympic, professional and top amateur athletes all demand maximum performance and sports chiropractic delivers. Lance Armstrong, Jerry Rice, Nolan Ryan, Evander Holyfield all swear by their sports chiropractors to keep them at the top of their game well past their prime. Lance Armstrong’s team had no overuse injuries in seven Tour de France’s unlike all the other cycling teams. At the Olympics, an estimated 80% of athletes utilized the sports chiropractors. Sports chiropractors have specialized post-graduate training specific for sports injury management and performance enhancement.
As a sports chiropractor, I look at the function of each joint, muscle and nerve supply. I look at balance, posture, kinetic chain function and strength. What I do different than orthopedists and physical therapists is that I instantly normalize or improve the function of the body and joints through various neurologic, muscular and nutritional protocols. Athletes remark at the end of treatment that their joint feels stable or pain free, when before it did not. And performance speaks for itself.
Of course with injuries, standard and sophisticated diagnostic protocols are utilized as needed. Collaboration with orthopedists and neurologists occurs in some cases of more debilitating injuries. Our rehab focuses on establishing proper neurologic control of the joints and muscles. Physical therapy is employed for long session rehab programs.
Athletes are usually finely tuned to recognize alterations in performance, but the site of pain is rarely the true source of the problem. That’s where sports chiropractors work best to identify and correct the true source of the problem. And it keeps an athlete functioning at 100%.
For instance, in the mid lower back, the nerves control the quadriceps (front thigh muscles). Kinesiology tests can detect subtle weakness to one or more of those four muscles. If you think of the knee joint like radio station antenna (the big ones), it has four guy-wires that hold it secure. If someone loosened one wire the antenna would tilt, fail and fall. The same goes for the knee. If the nerve function was diminished (usually painless) to one quadricep muscle, then when that athlete ‘cut’ during a run, the muscles would not contract in proper order and intensity. That’s how athletes commonly injure a knee without contact. The same holds true for all other joints of the body.
For an aspiring athlete, seasoned pro or weekend warrior, sports chiropractic is a must to manage common injuries and prevent serious ones.
